I made my own taco sauce for the first time. I imagined it would’ve been complicated and lengthy, but it took just a few minutes. I looked online and noticed that most recipes called for the same ingredients. So, I decided to add the seasonings to my own liking.
I do not do a lot of cooking or baking, however, I probably would have made a good short order cook. I am an ace at grilled cheese sandwiches, egg salad, cheeseburgers, and, antipasto. My greatest culinary achievement is my stuffed mushrooms. They are famous. I only make them once a year for the Christmas holiday. They take a lot of time and effort (for me anyway).
So back to the taco sauce. I bought a can of Hunt’s tomato sauce. Poured it in a saucepan and added the following:
- Cumin (a must)
- Chili Powder
- Cheyenne Pepper
- Garlic Powder
- Onion Powder
- White vinegar (about 1/4 tsp.)
- A dash of salt
I try to use salt-free whenever possible. There is way too much salt in canned foods.
The Smell Test
The smell test is something I like to perform on those rare occasions when I go on a cooking excursion. I add the ingredients one by one stirring continuously and sniffing the progress as I go along. I must say, the taco sauce turned out quite good. I knew I had it when the tomato sauce began to take on a brownish color, and, the aromatic spices just whirled from the saucepan. I knew then it was time to add it to the chopped sirloin sizzling alongside. When the seasonings absorbed into the meat, I used the Old El Paso taco kit and spooned the meat sauce into hard and soft tacos.
I added Colby jack cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes. and topped it with their tangy salsa-like sauce.
Tacos have evolved with folks adding all sorts of toppings, meats, and, vegetables. You can make your very own vegetarian tacos complete with spicy seasonings. Some people enjoy chicken or turkey meat in their tacos. If you have a nice piece of steak, you can cube it, cook, and, sauté with taco sauce a few minutes before the meat is fully cooked. Add sour cream and avocado (my favorite) and you are in line with traditional Mex/American tacos.
I do recommend the smell test along with a little intuition if you’re like me and enjoy experimenting with spices occasionally.
