Before cheesecakes became popular, they were served in the more obscure eatery’s. It was an atypical dessert and simply not for everyone. Sort of like Tiramisu until it became trendy. Now there are cheesecakes everywhere, and I mean everywhere. Cheesecake cupcakes, lollipops, muffins, brownies, pies, even cheesecake flavored ice cream, and the cheesy dessert trend continues. So, I must ask, has the world gone crazy? Whatever happened to truffle cakes, cream fillings, layer cakes with raspberry and white chocolate? It’s a little too much of a good thing I say. Yes, cheesecake has great historic value and it is a little thrilling to eat something that was served to the Olympians of ancient Greece but it was nothing like the lavish desserts of today. Keeping in mind that those amazing godlike Greek athletes were burning off the fat and calories, pushing their bodies to the limit. I don’t know about you, but even a vigorous workout after a piece of modern-day cheesecake doesn’t compensate to that measure.
I was shopping at my local supermarket and it includes an impressive bakery department. They had delicious New York style cheesecake by the slice. Not too rich, very moist and creamy. So, I bought one and the following week another and on it went for a month. I suddenly noticed that I could barely get into my jeans and thought about the possible culprit. I checked the package and yes, the cheesecake contained twenty grams of fat per slice. Yes, I said twenty grams of fat per slice.
So, these days, I avoid a full slice of cheesecake when out eating and never take a cheesecake home. Some servers will say in a flat tone “Well if you don’t want the chocolate fudge cherry cheesecake, we have plain chocolate cake or key lime pie”. I say while trying not to gag at the thought of key lime pie, “Do you have any Tiramisu? Forget it, I’ll just have coffee”. Oh, and by the way, there is a Tiramisu and cheesecake recipe out there. I know I’ve made mention of the fat content of my beloved cheesecake before but alas, I must elaborate. Why? Simply because they are working cheesecake into almost every dessert I come across. There are recipes for no-bake, low-fat cheesecakes, cheesecake with Nutella for a healthier cheesecake experience and evasive cheesecake fillings in almost everything else. I am speculating how long this will go on. I would imagine when unsuspecting people like myself stop fitting into their jeans, the cheesecake craze will begin to die down.

I love the stuff, pure and simple, but after seeing key lime cheesecake, I had to speak up. Give me good old-fashioned strawberry shortcake, or French creampie, remember that? Do not be discouraged. There are some genuinely good recipes out there that are low calorie and much lower fat content. I’ve included this one from AllRecipes.com
