The Desserts Are Coming!

I watched my first Holiday Season commercial and was offered my first piece of holiday cake. Then I smelled it, the flavored coffee and now I am off and running. It’s not like I lost weight in anticipation of the holidays this year, so I’m trying hard not to think about it but it’s there, it’s always there. So I might as well get it out on the table, so to speak.

I am thinking about New York City when a chill would settle in my bones and a numbness in my feet, and  I needed to get into a warm restaurant or cafe.  The taste of coffee and a slice of cheesecake took on a new meaning. It was as if I had struggled through a freezing desert and had found safety and comfort in a warm bistro. During the holidays there was a particular kind of warmth in the air, with decorations, lights, and lighthearted chatter. I could not bear to leave and go back out into the bitter weather.

It is also time for baking cookies and taking cookies off of someone else’s tray. Shortbreads, sugar cookies, and gingerbread just for starters. That’s what I love about the holidays, people dedicate so much of their time to making the world sweeter and more enjoyable.

I think fondly of my Stepdad Manny.  He was from Greece and prepared cuisine from his native land that I can still recall with perfect clarity today. Seasoned Quail, and Keftedes and of course my favorite dessert; Fresh Baklava, with brewed coffee. These are memories that give me instant peace and comfort.

I no longer live in the cool climate, and should probably put up a palm tree instead of a fir tree, but I still crave certain foods and beverages during the winter season, particularly coffee; Latte, Cappuccino, Espresso, and good old Flavored Dark Roast. Of course, I get very little sleep during the holidays, but why not, it’s only once a year.
